Rafael Trespalacios, M.D.Dr Trespalacios brings the standard of care to a new level.
First surgeon in Central Florida to perform Laser-Enabled
Corneal Transplant

Dr. Trespalacios completed his bachelor of science in biology and microbiology locally at UCF , when the idea of an affiliated medical school was only a dream. He then attended the University of South Florida School of Medicine and went on to become a board-certified ophthalmologist with distinctions throughout his medical/surgical training which includes the world-renowned Price Vision Group and Cornea Research Foundation of America where he was wooed to remain and set up practice. However wishing to return to his home state, he chose Brevard County to begin practicing consultative ophthalmology. As the medical director at Brevard Eye Center, he earned a reputation for excellence and was selected by respected colleagues in the field of cataract and LASIK surgery as one of the “Best Eye Doctors” in the country. But Dr. Tres never lost sight of his vision of bringing a prestigious eye care facility to Central Florida. With hard work and the support of thousands of happy visually restored patients behind him, he and his team have been able to create Brevard Eye Center with locations throughout Central Florida including Melbourne, Viera/Suntree and Merritt Island.  Now with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine a reality and residing among other impressive organizations such as Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Orlando VA Medical Center, Brevard Eye Center contributes to the ever-growing prestigious medical community of Central Florida.

Dr. Rafael Trespalacios was born in New Jersey and raised in Inverness Florida. He completed his undergraduate studies and obtained a degree at The University of Central Florida. Immediately following UCF, he attended the University of South Florida in Tampa where he obtained his medical degree. He then completed a one year internship at the University of South Carolina and a three year residency at the same institution to obtain training in his medical specialty, Ophthalmology. He was recognized and honored by his medical colleagues and students in training as ‘Resident of the Year’. He was also the recipient of the tremendous honor of being acknowledged by the medical faculty in selecting him to serve as chief resident as well as being selected for the Bylaws Committee by the hospital administration.

It was at this point that his training became differentiated from the majority of ophthalmologists, since he chose to spend over one extra year of study dedicated to the sub-specialty of the cornea and refractive procedures. During this time, he was the private student of one of the leading corneal specialists in the World at the Cornea Research Foundation of America. Here he participated and garnered first hand expertise pioneering complex corneal procedures, including advanced corneal transplants, artificial corneas, artificial irises, Implantable Contact Lenses, and Intacs for keratoconus. This experience allowed Dr. Trespalacios to further perfect and enhance his skills as the premier refractive surgeon. It is this extra level of expertise and knowledge that allows Dr. Trespalacios’ surgical palate to include the full complement of Beyond LASIK and Cataract procedures.

Life has brought Dr. Trespalacios full circle. He has brought these skills back to East Central Florida where he has served for years as the Director of Refractive Services at Brevard Eye Center, performing thousands of sight saving procedures every year. He is also the medical director of Brevard Eye Center, Central Florida’s newest and most comprehensive center for refractive surgery. He has developed a reputation for excellence and is one of only a handful of surgeons in the nation and the only Ophthalmologist in East Central Florida with surgical results so outstanding they are independently insurable. He also holds the distinction of being the only ophthalmologist in Brevard County and East Central Florida to have been selected by a stringent peer review process for Best Doctors 2013. He is also presently a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Central Florida college of Medicine. Dr. Trespalacios has authored and coauthored multiple publications in the Ophthalmology literature as well as being Board certified by the national board of medical examiners, Board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is here today as the first and most experienced surgeon fully credentialed and prepared to implant the iStent micro glaucoma device in Central Florida.
