Laser Skin Resurfacing

Although the carbon dioxide laser has been used to perform surgery for over thirty years, a recent technological breakthrough now allows precise alteration of damaged and wrinkled skin with the laser. As opposed to a chemical peel, dermabrasion or other forms of laser treatment, the CO2 laser allows a surgeon to customize the surgery not only for each patient, but also for each area of the face. For example, the thinner, more delicate skin of the eyelids requires different and more sensitive treatment than the cheeks, upper lip and forehead.

Laser skin resurfacing is for those who have:

  • sun damaged skin
  • acne scars
  • some pre-cancerous skin conditions
  • age spots and superficial pigmentation
  • wrinkles

What to expect on procedure day:

Laser skin resurfacing is performed in a specially equipped laser room. The length of your procedure will depend on how much of your face is being treated. You and your doctor will discuss the method of anesthesia that is best for you.

During your procedure, the CO2 laser energy will be applied to your face in quick bursts. With the first pass of the laser beam, the old skin will be vaporized. Subsequent passes cause the collagen in the underlying layers to tighten, resulting in smoother, healthier skin.  Discomfort can vary from patient to patient.

You will be given medication to keep you comfortable during and after the procedure. Immediately after the treatment, your skin will be very red and sensitive. The degree of redness depends on the age and health of your skin. The redness will fade to pink and gradually resolve. Normally, the pink color may be camouflaged with make-up after seven to 10 days.

Someone will need to drive you home after your procedure, and you'll probably want to relax for the rest of the day. You'll need to avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks after your procedure. Also avoid liquid foundations or pressed powder foundations for seven days.

Expectations:

Serious complications with laser skin resurfacing are extremely rare, but like any medical procedure, it does have some risks. Going to a specialist experienced in laser skin resurfacing can significantly minimize the risks. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their appearance after microdermabrasion, however, we cannot guarantee you will have the results you desire.

If you decide that laser skin resurfacing is an option for you, you will be given additional information about the procedure that will allow you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed. Be sure you have all your questions answered to your satisfaction.

Alternatives to microdermabrasion:

Chemical peels and cosmetic surgery have been the primary means of reducing the undesirable effects of aging and wrinkles. If you would like more information about this exciting procedure, you may want to make an appointment, attend a seminar or request additional information from our practice.
